Camp Merrill

Post by NashvilleRanger »

Good evening,

I've been separated from the military just over 11 years now (Ranger Class 3-96) and am now a civilian. While in Ranger school, I would have to say that my favorite phase was hands down the Mountain Phase in Dahlonega. Although I thought I'd never see the place again, luck would have it that I am on business about 45 minutes from Camp Merrill. I'm thinking about heading up that way tomorrow to "get that old feeling back". I would imagine that, especially post 9/11, that things across the entire military are extremely tight. Does anyone know if its even possible to get a look inside the camp (having graduated Ranger School)? I don't know if I'll ever get the chance to go here again.

Thanks for all the help.

RLTW.

Pete, recon the site a little more. You've already made your intro. Post this request over in the Mosh pit or something.
That being said, I'm interested in the answer too.
The Mountain Ranger Ass'n has an open BBQ most years right around now IIRC, look around for info on that.

Camp Merrill

Post by NashvilleRanger »

I said to heck with it today and made the hour trek to Camp Merill. Greeted by what appeared to be a civilian guard who let me gain entrance to the camp. It was great seeing it again. Even had the pleasure of seeing 5 busloads of new Ranger candidates getting torn apart by the RI's for sleeping on the bus-ride up there. I celebrated that it wasn't me by getting a milkshake with spoonfuls of peanut butter topped with M&Ms. Hopefully someday I can go back and check out the "Lowers" and the rope corral.

Mountain phase...

mmmm... blueberry pancakes and muffins. Early morning smell and feel of the mountains as the fog is lifting. Feeling my heart trying to beat out of my chest as the whole mob slowly snakes up a 90% slope (or at least it was what it felt like). Seeing the gold dome of the city in the distance, and knowing there is a pizza place there. The small squad size huts (which are probably gone now) and putting your name there besides legends.

Did I mention the pancakes?

The link below goes to some pictures from Mountain Phase I uploaded to the gallery, hopefully I did it right. They are not the greatest pics, but the best I could do at the time with a contraband camera. I found it in the woods during one of the first cadre-led patrols. It was apparently lost by some kids out hiking based on the first few pictures that were on the camera. I got it home and was surprised that any of the pictures came out. I didn't get my tab that time, but I managed to modify the saying to "you either have a tab or a story (and pictures)".
