Former Sheriff Jailed For Assault

Post by KS110 »

Rangers,

I know ArmyRanger.com has some LEOs and I was hoping to hear some opinions on this. Its somewhat old news so I searched but didn't find a thread on it. Long story short, a handcuffed suspect in the back of a squad car ignored repeated commands to stop kicking the window and one Officer "snapped" and hit him several times. The Officer, with no prior record, lost his job and was sentenced to 18 months in jail.

I usually just tase them. Found that most of the time you only have to put that red dot on their chest, and they'll quit.

He went a little far there. So....I understand the problem.

Actually the "take away" from this should alert all of our brothers that using PTSD as a defense will not be successful.

I agree that it is really excessive, however....they are going to burn LEO's for everything that we do out of line. We're supposed to be the top of the "moral standard", and that uniform means we are not allowed to make those mistakes.

While the jackleg I lock up for distribution of cocaine in a bar in downtown Clemson gets 5 years probation after a 90 day intensive (still not sure what that means) prison stay, and his criminal history is as thick as a Websters Dictionary.

I saw no one post anything about how all officers act.

You get way too defensive.

Back on topic.

He's a jackass that deserved to get charged and to lose his job. Smacking someone that is defenseless is puthetic regardless of the perp being a jackass. But 1.5 years seems to be a bit much to me.

And I agree with the ape about the use of PTSD as a defense. Stupid. The more that dipshits like this try to use it as a reason for going off is going to cause problems down the road. Sooner or later the PTSD label could become seriously stygmatized. (however you spell it)

I'd have to say it's because the offense didn't justify it. There are non-excessive means of control for situations like that. Ie...the taser, the pepper (like someone else said). If they deserve an ass whoopin the facts will justify the response, like "he continued to fight and I continued to strike".

And he got caught.

I have never and would not ever second guess the guy on the ground. But he plead guilty so the question of his guilt was answered by the guy on ground.

Agreed, and just in case I wasn't clear. I'm not supporting what the moron did. He screwed the pooch and went to far.
