Thank you for the timely post, Ranger RangerX. Remembering that day and the men who were there is important.

Yep! I sure did. They were truly "The Greatest Generation". I will never forget back in 92, 1st BN was training up at Campbell while the 50th Anniversary of the 11th Airborne reunion was going on. We ran into one of these great heroes and he invited us to their BBQ. We spent an entire afternoon eating great food, drinking free draft beer and meeting these great men and hearing their story. I will NEVER forget that afternoon. Never. God Bless them!

This past Memorial Day I was part of the local VFW firing squad in ceremonies at five local cemeteries.

One of the ceremonies includes a flyover by a private plane dropping a wreath in the local river as we hold the ceremony on the bridge. The pilot of that plane is (and has been for 40+ years) Elmer Wishard, a C47 pilot who dropped US paratroopers into Normandy and Arnhem. A skinny old guy with a perpetual grin on his face, he will talk to you for hours about his experiences flying in the worst weather and hostile fire of the war. I know he is a main character in a book, can't recall the name of it, damn CRS again.

Damn! Things like this remind us that not all of the French are assholes. Not sure how much of their press is like ours and accentuates the left over the right.

When my grandfather passed away, my aunt told me that if
there was anything of his that I wanted; to go look through
his personal belongings. Upon doing this, I came across his
WW1 GI New Testiment. It was very worn and soiled, with
even what was possibly blood. In the back, he had written
down every battle he was in; complete with the date, place
and a narrative of the battle. I did not take it.

Thanks for the post, Ranger X.

Someone with more time, bump the post from a few years ago of SLA Marshall's article on the beach landings. In that article he tracks each landing craft, and what happened to the men inside, in that first wave. Private Ryan only scratched the surface.
