Resigning a commission to sever in 75th/SF

Good day Gentlemen, is it common or even possible for a commissioned officer to resign their commission in order to join the 75th or go SF? I ask because a enlisted friend of mine who has a propensity for stretching the truth told me that a captain in his battalion resigned his commission to go SF. Thanks for your time.

It would not be unheard of but it normally runs in concurrence with a substandard evaluation report or something of that ilk.

I think he was saying that if an Officer received a "Officer Career killing Eval" and stood a snowballs chance in the Arizona desert of having a decent career as an Officer...he might resign his commission and go enlisted. With that, he may choose to pursue SF or Regt. I cant say I have ever seen an Officer in good standing resign his commission just to do this, but its a big Army.

Roy Wood was a medical doctor and officer that spent close to 12 years with 11th SFG and 20th SFG ending up as a Battalion Surgeon. In 2002 he resigned his commission to become a 18D with an ODA. Sadly he was KIA in 2004.

He's the only one I'm aware of that's taken this route but it has been done before.

It occurs infrequently in the Army National Guard. The former commander of A troop, 104th Cav, resigned his commission as a Major so that he could deploy with the troop to the Balkins several years ago. On the other hand, there were a number of former commissioned officers serving as NCOs in the late 1970s as a result of Reductions in Force (RIF) actions by the Army.

I resigned my commission in the Army Guard as a CPT to join the Air Guard as an E-5. I almost resigned my commission soon after I got it because of how dicked up the Guard can be in the field.

I hate officers so it wasn't hard for me to resign my commission in the Guard. I was offered a direct commission in the MD ARNG because of my service in my NG unit, 1/75, I was finishing up my grad degree and they were hurting for MSC officers. I almost turned it down but a very cool CSM took me aside and told me to take it and that I could resigned it when it stopped being fun.

I know of several officers that have resigned thier commision to pursue other things. One of our own board members here resigned his commision to go warrant and fly. My best friend is an SF Major with 2 combat jumps with 3/75. He came REAL close to resigning his commission so he could stay in the field. My old BN Chemical NCO was a former O-4 who got out, resigned his commission, enlisted and was pursuing SF.

You never know what goes on in them mind of some folks.

I also served with an 18D (now a Z) who resigned his commission after serving as an SF team leader. Last time I saw him he was an SF team sergeant.

Couldn't tell you that much. He took Tom Maholics team after Tom was killed in '06. 765 If I remember correctly.
