Where is the Best BBQ?

Post by Boudicca »

My opinion, (like it matters)...

Of course Texas. The brisket and sausage in Elgin, TX at the Southside Meat Market.
To be loved is to be fortunate, but to be hated is to achieve distinction.

Not a great deal to even speculate on here. And yea, one of the top 10 is Southside Meat. Course, The Rock Island Shootery is known to have some badass Q its damned self.

According to Texas monthly it's located in Lexington, TX...at a place only open 4 hours on Saturday.

The rest of the top 5 are located in Lockhart, Luling and Taylor. I assume you meant where is the best BBQ in Texas, I don't think they make it anywhere else.

If you ever see the grill/pit at the Ranch, you'll have a better appreciation for what the good Pastor is preaching. I know I'm a believer. 8)

Cooper's BBQ in Llano, TX is my favorite. Walk past the pits and point out what you want. The Salt Lick in Driftwood, TX is also damn good.

Dreamland BBQ has very good ribs. As far as Chopped pork I would have to say Macon Road BBQ in Columbus or Fort Mitchell in Phenix city..

Some of my Benning homeboys can back me up on this.

First off: best thread ever.

I love BBQ. I have no ability to control myself eating it. I read books on it. BBQ is effing awesome. When BBQ supplanted cheese steaks as my favorite food, I knew I had cut my northerner ties. Did I mention that I love BBQ?

We need to specify the TYPE of BBQ. Carolina BBQ is vinegar based. Texas is red sauce based. Memphis has very little sauce and is more focused on the meat (dry rubbed). My personal favorite is St. Louis style mustard based sauce on dry rubbed pork.

That said, the best BBQ joint for mustard based is 17th Street (http://www.17thstreetbarbecue.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) located in S. Illinois. This guy won the Memphis in May BBQ competition (the Oscars of BBQ) as Grand Champoin 3 times (the only one to ever do so) and World Champion 4 times. He has a book out where he gives all the best BBQ locations and recipes (including his own). His theory is that recipes need to be shared.

If you like BBQ, you need this book. It's called 'Peace Love and BBQ' and I think it's on Amazon. You can also get it from his site. His rub and sauce are awesome and can be bought, or you can make it from the recipe in the book.

Other great spots: Nashville - Jacks downtown. Memphis - Rendezvous.
