New Lease on Life for the Beloved M-14

Post by Ranger Andy »

www.military.com says the Army is bringing back the M-14! I always thought that was a cool gun...

No doubt in my military mind that the M-14 7.62X39 can really ruin a turbin! Yep it is exra weight, but in the wide open hill country or flat land it is a piece (pun intended) maker!!
Of all the military weapons I have fired from the BAR, M-1, Thompson Sub (carried one in RVN after my M-16 got bashed about 10 times against a tree!), 45.cal "Grease gun", '03 Springfield, AK, SKS, etc... the M-14 was one I realllly liked, would fire in any condition and was damned accurate!
I only wish I had one right now for home defense.

Ahh yes!! I remember when we switched from the M-14 to the M-16 in Basic. After using the M-14 and switching, out on the range you couldn't tell when you had fired the M-16.

I was in-country when we had to turn-in the M-14 and draw an M-16.

I was in the last Recruit Series at MCRD San Diego that was issued the M14 and qualified with it. I've always maintained that you couldn't beat perfection. The M16 variants, especially that damn M203 just seemed like step backs.

We actually qualified on the M14 but those of us who had just received 11b mos had a special day where they took just us to the range with the 16's

I actually got along pretty well with the M16 in Nam. Never had any trouble with mine.

I took the M-14 all through RS, the extra weight was satisfying when I had the only weapon that worked, unless you count the "bolt action" M-16s.
I imagine it'd suck to do house clearing with, but out in the open, given a choice, there's mine.

Speaking of OLD weapons and OLD men, I was looking through some OLD orders (turning brown now) night before last and to my amazement I discovered or was reminded that I AM AN EXPERT with a grenade!!! 8)

I was wondering if anyone on this site might have any extra grenades? I was thinking that I should try and see if I am STILL an expert!! (As far as grenades are concerned)

Edited to add: Perhaps I was the reason for the phrase: "Close only counts with horse shoes and hand grenades"

My children told me that: Close only counts with horse shoes, hand grenades and nuclear bombs!
