The Partying Amish

Post by Flesh Thorn »

When Amish children turn 16, the rules change. They're encouraged to experiment and explore. The idea is that teens will come back to the church after tasting the modern world. For most, this means a tentative foray -- a trip to the local movie theater, or driving lessons. But for some, the experience, called rumspringa, is all about sex, parties and fast cars.

Sounds just like my old man. Born/raised in Detroit, retires from the Army (after 26 years), moves to Houston Texas, picks up an accent, starts wearing big belt buckles and cowboy boots and now claims he's always been from Texas.

God bless Texas

National Geographic had a one hour show on this last night. The title was "The Devil's Playground". It most likely will come on again. They showed all the Amish kids over 18 with cars, cell phones, the works. They would get on their phones and call other Amish kids from all over the country and have massive 1,500 people parties. Drugs, alcohol, the works. The showcased one kid who did crystal meth. He ended up wearing a wire to bust Amish drug dealers, and the drug dealers were going to have him killed.

Man! If this ain't the makings of a movie, I don't know what is!!

The show was the inspiration for this post. The way the Amish adults give their children complete, 100% freedom to experiment with drugs, sex, alcohol, etc. before they commit to the Amish way of life is very interesting. Too bad that I couldn't have hooked up with a bunch of these drunken Amish girls looking to experiment back when I was 16. :D
