37 Injured in March at Fort Bragg, 1 Critically

Post by C-MAC »

I thought the "bot" would pick this story up...but it didn't. Most interesting part of the story? The comments below along the lines of "soldiers today are too coddled" and "back in the day we use to drink all night and go on these runs the next morning".

FORT BRAGG, N.C. --- Dozens of Soldiers at North Carolina's Fort Bragg suffered heat-related problems after participating in an early morning march.

Base spokesman Ben Abel said Friday that 37 Soldiers required medical treatment. Of those, 13 were taken to Womack Army Medical Center.

The weather they quoted in this story seems to be the climate every time I am in NC during that time of the year; temperature in the 70's+ and humidity 90%.

Am I just lucky or is that typical?

A few different possibilities are floating in my mind:

1. If the temperatures were only in the 70's, did they get caught by the relatively mild weather (compared to say 90 deg+ with 95%+ r.h.) and not drink enough water in the first place?
2. Was there a virus going around and the troops tried to push through anyway? (Maybe after taking some phenylephrine for conjestion)
3. Since these were medical troops, presumably with medical NCOs and officers running the event, did those NCOs and officers recognize signs of heat injury early, and pulled the troops off the event? (where-as most other branches, even MI, would probably wait for a troop to either faint or quit before pulling them off an event like that)
