Soldiers give cooling systems mixed reviews
One day, a soldier’s battle-rattle may include a wearable air conditioner for staying cool under fire.
It may sound like a joke, but Army scientists recently conducted an experiment at Fort Benning, Ga., that involved 18 soldiers running around wearing “micro-climate cooling systems,” according to an Army news release.
Benning’s Maneuver Battle Lab, working with engineers from the Army’s Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center, evaluated two individual soldier cooling systems in the Aug. 24-28 experiment.

Yeah...that'll happen about 5 years after Mr.Fusion is powering your flying DeLorean or when Tony Stark invents the micro arc reactor in an A'stan cave, take your pick. The exosuits right now have to be connected to an external power source (or compressed air).Oto-Man wrote:Embrace the Suck!!!!rgrpuck wrote:Like I aint humoing 80lbs of shit now with out a ruck.....

Re: Soldiers give cooling systems mixed reviews
look at the size of that fucking thing. There's half my fighting load gone to make room for my AC unit. Of course, it takes "standard military batteries". So besides all my kill people shit, I need spare batteries for my NVG's, MBITR, PEQ-15, Flashlight, Strobe, and now my AC pack. Sweet!

Re: Soldiers give cooling systems mixed reviews
a couple thoughts...
Around 1999 we had a XO that used to run around talking "Rangers fighting in Exo-skeletons" and we all thought he was crazy, turns out he may have been smarter than all of us combined.
Batteries storage and portage will get easier as battery technology improves. I can still remember the moment when I actually realized how many batteries I was carrying as a squad leader. During the Invasion, I am certain I was carrying at least 60 AA batts.

Absolutly agree with the Great Ape (once again). The issue of a power source is critical -- there are too many variations of what battery is used. Particularly vexing when Army buys "Off the shelf" products/equipment.Silverback wrote:a couple thoughts...

Re: Soldiers give cooling systems mixed reviews
The Canadian Army is gearing up for their new soldier system program. I'm involved in bidding into that program as a contractor. One of their primary concerns is power, and they are really taking some novel approaches to solving the problem. Probably the leading approach they are looking at is clothing that actually generates electricity as you move around. I've seen some prototypes of this, and it shows some promise for being able to recharge a battery pack that powers everything else on the soldier. In a lot ways, the Canadians are going about their soldier system equipment in a lot smarter fashion than our Army is. Land Warrior is a joke up there.
