North Korea has lost internet

Post by Flesh Thorn »

SAN FRANCISCO — North Korea’s already tenuous links to the Internet went completely dark on Monday after days of instability, in what Internet monitors described as one of the worst North Korean network failures in years.

The loss of service came just days after President Obama pledged that the United States would launch a “proportional response” to the recent attacks on Sony Pictures, which government officials have linked to North Korea. While an attack on North Korea’s networks was suspected, there was no definitive evidence of it.

Doug Madory, the director of Internet analysis at Dyn Research, an Internet performance management company, said that North Korean Internet access first became unstable late Friday. The situation worsened over the weekend, and by Monday, North Korea’s Internet was completely offline.

North Korea suffers second Internet outage
North Korea's Internet was down again on Tuesday, according to monitoring specialist Dyn Research, with the latest blackout coming hot on the heels of Monday's widespread nine-hour outage.

According to our in-house IT guy, NK has a total of just over 1000 IP addresses, less than we have in my county with a population of 15,000.
Most of those are probably the little fat guy's family and some gov't. officials. Wonder how much of the traffic is porno for Kim Jong Chubby?

The UN was talking about bringing charges against NK in the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Which is all well and good but if he's convicted who carries out the sentence? Last I checked we don't belong to the ICC and we're the only ones capable (if we're willing to eat nukes unanswered). Anyone other than China forces a regime change there and China will lose their shit. If China forces a change everyone else will lose their shit.

So those 1,000 IP addresses being shut down is O's equivalent to a fucking slap fight between two fairies. Way to go boss, that'll teach them.

FWIW, hardwire connections to NK are exclusively through China. Those and the few satellite uplinks (also Chinese) are the exclusive domain on Gargoyle Jr and his cronies. The rest of the country gets the NK net only.

So if NK lost their connection, it is VERY possible it was just China jerking their leash and telling them "Heel!".

I think you are correct, at least from what I have seen.

There is also conjecture about NK itself interrupting Internet service to enforce a point to their own people. So many theories, so little time.
