Cargo jet that landed at wrong airport takes off on short ru

Post by Flesh Thorn »

A mammoth cargo plane that landed Wednesday night at the wrong airport in Wichita, Kansas -- one that typically does not accommodate such beasts -- took off without incident Thursday afternoon on a runway half a mile shorter than it usually uses.

The Boeing 747 Dreamlifter's massive engines roared as it lumbered down the pavement, then lifted off and disappeared into the overcast sky.

A few minutes later, it landed without incident at the airport 12 miles across town where it was originally supposed to land -- McConnell Air Force Base.

I wonder if the pilot & co-pilot flipped a coin to see who was going to land this bird.

Just judging by the weather conditions there, looks like the density altitude helped a great deal in getting that behemoth airborne.

That is the question the FAA, NTSB, Boeing and Atlas will all be looking at. even with all their GPS and Inertial Nav stuff he is still asking ATC where they are......erf.

The Atlas Air 747 Dreamlifter used a runway that is far shorter than it normally requires for takeoff after, an airport spokeswoman said, engineers calculated that the takeoff would be safe.
I wonder what would have happened if the engineers said you couldn't lift off? Put it on a giant flatbed, like the space shuttle?
