Back To 1969

Post by Flesh Thorn »

Charles Dickens could have written about it: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way."

Not to mention tin soldiers and Nixon coming.

The following events happened within one month:

July 18: Ted Kennedy drove his car off the road at Chappaquiddik, killing Mary Jo Kopechne.
July 20: Men first walked on the moon, planting the US flag on it.
August 9: Members of Charlie Manson's cult murdered Sharon Tate, who was eight months pregnant, and three of her friends.
August 15-19: the Woodstock music festival was held in upstate New York.
About 900 US servicemen died in Vietnam.

i was at Ft. Bragg in 6th SFG(A), prepping for the big FTX and the two-way range.

BTW, did you guys know Mary Jo Kopechne did not drown? She suffocated, trapped in the upside down car breathing a small air space until the oxygen was gone and was found that way when the divers finally got to the car. Had that (fill in the blank) Kennedy gone directly to the authorities to report it that night, she could have been saved. Instead he went home to bed to sleep it off.

I missed it all as well, except for the 900.

Of course most of the hippies, protesters and general riff-raff had a saying; if you remember the 60s you weren't there.

Yeah, I was in the U Minh forest, and I heard that the US had put a man on the moon on AFN Radio. My Viets were impressed -- but I was still up to my ass in mud.

In Apr '68, I remember right after our reception (x amount of days) we were then issued olive green fatigues - the old type, we donned them and headed over to the barber.
Afterwards we all wandered around looking for our friends as none were recognizable without their hair & we began reading name tags to find our buddies.

I was 5 years old and remember watching the evening news every night with my mother and seeing all the VN footage. Her little brother was there and I remember she would cry every night.

You FOGs (yeah you guys know who you are) were my heroes growing up, still are. Thanks for giving me something worthy to look up to!

I'd like to bring the memory of our dearly departed friend, DoorGunner (& his fellow pilots & crews) where men of his caliber saved our asses in those magnificent flying machines hueys with that distant sound of wop wop wop coming closer & closer. & our brothers we left behind those many years ago.

Here here. We miss you John. Hard as woodpecker lips and funny as fuck at the same time.

Not only did Ole Teddy The Drunken Irishman go home that night, take a shower, put on dry clothes and climb into his comfy Kennedy bed while this young girl suffocated as was mentioned, tearing each and every fingernail out of her hands as she clawed at the roof of that vehicle for hrs trying to escape and slowly died overnight. But he then woke up in the morning, casually went downstairs and ate breakfast with his Mommy, and then decided to alert local authorities to the accident (surely only after speaking to the Kennedy Family Lawyer). Disgusting.

As for me, I was just barely 2 ys old, and as someome else said, trying not to shit myself, which, by the way, if time keeps whizzing by the way it is, I'll be doing all over again here pretty soon.

Last time I was out at Chappy, the scrape marks were still visible on the bridge. Vineyarders still remember, yet they managed to elect his chunk-style ass enough times
