SP6 Lawrence Joel Was awarded the MH for his actions as a unit medic on 8 November 1965.

It should be noted that this battle in D Zone happened just 6 days before Colonel Moore hopped off that chopper in the Ia Drang Valley.

The Viet Cong had been fighting their war since the late 1930s, and by 1965 they were VERY good at it. While the NVA were better trained militarily, they were mostly conscripts with little motivation to fight. The VC were fighting for their Homeland and they'd been learning how for 30 years.
