Ranger Students Struck By Lightning

Post by centermass »

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fl. (WEAR) Twenty-one soldiers are recovering at Eglin AFB Hospital after a lightning incident on the range Wednesday.

Students with the 6th Ranger Training Battalion were doing a field training exercise when they got a lightning warning within ten miles.

Training was stopped, but several strikes (S) hit the area and one hit near the platoon.

Officials say no one was hit directly.

Nine soldiers were taken to the hospital by helicopter and rest of the platoon soon followed. Eighteen students and three instructors are still recovering, but are in stable condition with no major injuries.

See, even GRITS is unhappy that the army has sullied Ranger School forever. He's chucking lightning bolts at them for crying out loud.

In the mountains my patrol had a near lightning strike that knocked us all off of our feet, all I saw was a bright flash that took out my night vision. When I went to get up my left arm might as well have been jello, I walked the rest of the night praying that I would get feeling back in the arm, I did. I still don't know to this day if the lightning did it or the tree I hit when I got knocked down. No one claimed an injury and we continued the march; the fear of a recycle is quite the motivator.

Lightning Strikes 44 Soldiers and Instructors at Army Ranger School

This is the same class that includes two female candidates who are participating in the third and final phase of Ranger School at Camp Rudder at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. All of the lightning-strike victims were males. The group was in day seven of the 10-day training cycle during the so-called “swamp phase.”

That RS class probably got more press coverage than any single class in the existence of RS.
