Savannah Night Stalker Killed in Training

Post by SLEDGE HAMMER »

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
Fort Campbell has released the name of an Army Special Operations Aviation soldier who was killed late Wednesday night when a Blackhawk was landing at Hunter Army Airfield.

Capt. Clayton O. Carpenter, 31, was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), Hunter Army Air Field, according to a Fort Campbell news release. He was killed when his MH-60M Blackhawk helicopter experienced a hard landing during routine military flight training. Two others were injured in the incident.

Carpenter was a native of Brooklyn, NY, and a 2005 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, and served as a Special Operations Helicopter Platoon Leader. He is survived by his parents Paul and Colette Carpenter of Cortland Manor, NY.

The U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center is investigating the incident.

Clay was my classmate in green platoon. A man and officer of the highest character and integrity. We are better for having known him.
