SITREP- J031

Post by J031 »

Rangers,

Here I sit six days out from shipping and I feel like I'm running on a mix of nervous excitement about getting started on this journey. I've never been more pumped up or prepared for something in my life, and as I get closer to the 18th it seems like time keeps moving slower and slower from anticipation alone. I'll post again when I get to the hotel, but I'm opening up my letters from school thread now as instructed by Ranger Jim. I know you Rangers, at least for the most part, don't like being thanked for mentoring us, so I'm not going to thank you but say that ya'll have prepared me more than most people would ever dream of going into a training pipeline such as this. Whether it was Ranger Cams, Ranger rangerjd, Ranger Jim, and Ranger Fuego busting my balls for being a smartass in my intro or Ranger IntelToad and Ranger fatboy leading the Land Nav class I know I'm only going into my career better off because of your efforts.

Rangers,

I'm sitting at the hotel having just got back from a final dinner with my family, and I couldn't be more ready to get started on this journey. All of the anxiousness I've been feeling for about a week now has subsided. I've said all of my goodbyes, and tied up all of the loose ends I needed to before shipping. My body is prepared for what is to come, and now my mind is ready too. I'll update y'all when I get the chance.

Rangers,

We had our turning blue ceremony this morning and I couldn't be happier. The first step of my journey is complete, and I don't think I would've had anywhere near the success I did were it not for the mentorship I received from y'all before shipping out.

My biggest take sways from infantry OSUT:
1. Ranger Lunch's advice posted above is really all you need to know going in. It's really as simple as doing the right thing and not being a shit bag.
2. Speaking of shitbags; there will be a lot of them, and they will begin to show themselves early. Stay the fuck away from people who don't pull their weight. At most 20% of the people in my company gave a fuck. Help out with the shitty details, always volunteer when a DS asks for people. It probably will go unnoticed, but if you know it's the right thing do it. Don't take any lazy days and just fuck off. You will have ample opportunities to do so, don't fucking take them.
3. The topics covered in the five mentees thread and other threads on this site will be relevant to your training at OSUT. Take your assignments here seriously.
4. Your OSUT experience will be greatly impacted by the type of leadership in your company. I got lucky and got put in a great company, but everyone won't get that. PT on your own, and buy a ranger handbook when they allow you to (my copy was confiscated by some fucking holdover on staff duty my first day at reception).
5. Again, don't be a fucking shitbag.

I'm going to go get some time in with family and will post a more in depth SITREP in regards to training and what my everyday experience was at Infantry OSUT in the next couple days.

As promised here is my more in depth break down of Infantry OSUT. I know this has been touched on numerous times, but if this helps anyone out somewhat I'll consider writing this out worth it.

30th AG (Reception): Congrats--you've shipped from wherever home is and you're all jacked up to get started with some infantry shit at Ft. Benning...you've got to spend 10 days waiting in lines. 30th AG was by far my least favorite part of OSUT. It sucks. There really isn't much else to say about this.

Red Phase: More mentally challenging than anything else, this is mainly due to the fact that a lot of people are either fucking retarded or don't care in the slightest about doing to right thing. Due to these two issues you'll constantly get smoked. The smoke sessions themselves aren't bad, but after getting smoked multiple times for the same people having the same fuck ups it gets pretty annoying.

White Phase: This is where you start getting classes on rifle marksmanship. You'll also go out to the range just about every day. This Phase is going to be impacted most by how motivated your cadre are. If you've got good drill sergeants you can actually improve a lot during these three weeks.

Blue Phase: This is where you'll start doing the fun stuff; urban operations, patrolling, battle drills. If you aren't motivated during blue phase something is wrong; all of the stuff you'll do during blue phase is the base skill set you'll need as an infantryman.

Black Phase: Black Phase is about two and a half weeks of field trials. My company did a 5 day STT, which is basically the teach up before FTX. We had a couple days off after STT before FTX, which was 7 days. All FTX involves is doing battle drills, and setting up patrol bases.

Gold Phase: Literally the only thing you do is clean gear and turn it back in.

OSUT is what you make it. Put out in everything you do and you will see improvement. Don't take anything here too lightly, but also don't psyche yourself out about any of the graduation requirements like the 12 mile ruck or land nav. The drill sergeants will prepare you more than enough to pass these events. Put out, don't be a shit bag, maintain your military bearing, and don't get complacent towards the end and you'll be fine.

My first morning downstairs in reception... I convinced myself and several other people to wear black boot socks with our PT uniforms because it matched... why would we wear idiot looking white ankle socks when we can wear knee high black boot socks.

Thanks for bringing that memory back Joel.

Ranger Jim,

I head over to Pre-RASP tomorrow morning. It's a bit surreal to me that I'm so close to realizing what I've been working for the past two years. I feel like I'm prepared for what is to come.

Airborne was fun when we jumped, but it was mostly boring as hell. On my 4th jump my chute cigarette rolled and I had to pull my reserve, but all that served to do was solidify the trust I had in my equipment. Not much to say about airborne other than that. Mentees get ready to stand around most of the day, do a couple slow ass 5 mile runs, and fall down a lot.
