Friend with Romantic Ideas of the army

Post by Ghostex »

When I say romantic, I don't mean all lovey dovey, but rather the guts and glory definition. My friend, who shall be named B, believes the Army is like a Rambo movie where he can chop somebody in half with a machine gun and run through a hail of bullets unscathed. B believes becoming a Ranger or SEAL is as easy as just asking to be one. He does not understand the dangers and physical demands involved. He has an overall Romantic mind and believes Infantry is where his heart lies.

One of the main problems with him is that he is 6'2", 145lbs, and out of shape. I have tried to educate and motivate him by showing various videos on BCT, BAC, Ranger School, and BUDs. I have even encouraged him to start working out with me. I have jogged 2 miles with him two times, and both times he was extremely winded afterwards. He has told me that he has been working out at home for the past 3 months, but I have seen little change or improvement in his physical build. Now, whenever I ask him if he wants to go for a jog, there is always an excuse.

Last week, I straight up told him that he is unmotivated and not cut out for Infantry let alone the Army if he doesn’t get his act together. It seems like I got to him for a second, because he told me he would start looking at other MOS’.

Then at the beginning of this week he told me he was thinking about joining the Marines. Same Shit Different Day--- How do I reach him!? As a close friend of his, I do not think he is cut out for it and I don’t want him to be miserable for 3+ years. He is a Senior in High School and plans on joining right after graduation.

Seems like your friend has some maturity issues and nothing like a cold bucket of reality to grow a dumbass up. Let him join, let him find his own misery. Friends can be defined several ways. Keeping them from learning the hard lessons isnt always what a friend does.

And how would you exactly know whether he is cut out for something you have never done yourself? There are quite a few people I worked with who were not cut out for anything. When they actually got to BCT or Bootcamp, they realized that play time was over and stepped up to the plate. Don't be so quick to shoot your buddy down and for fucks sake, stop posting so much. Read more, post less.

You might need to sit down over a game of hockey and work this thing out.

As stated previously, how would you know what the real Army is like? I guess having watched all those videos yourself several times you probably think you've been there and done that. Sounds to me like you've got your own glorious ideas about what it's really like. Those videos are NOT it, I assure you. You may want to refrain from telling anyone that they are not cut out for the infantry. You remind me of the guy who wore BDUs to school every day and thought they were the SME for military service then less than a year after being in, went AWOL and got a bad conduct discharge. You sound like you think you are the shit with a superiority complex and nobody wants to be around someone like that.

Secondly, don't judge someone on whether or not you believe they are making progress by their physique. I went to boot camp 6', 143 lbs and came out 20 pounds bigger. The years following I managed to get up to 185 but as a skinny guy, I have never and will never look big no matter how much I eat, lift, etc.

Oh and by the way, the next time he mentions joining the Marines, make sure you tell him how big of pussies they are.
