Cold/wet/hungry.
Absorb boatloads of information.
Have twice as much to do in half the time available to do it in.
Blisters. rot. hunger. acne. rucksack strap burns on shoulders and back. Droning.
But all the while knowing they couldn't kill me and that the end date was never more than 58 days away, nothing much at all to compare to your grandfather's experience.

It was a vacation from Battalion. We were the first group to go to school from 3/75 and we kept wondering when it would get hard. I was also surrounded by West Point cadets. Anything I did, at all, made me look like a genius.

Not the most difficult thing I have ever done in my life - but probably the most influencing thing that has shaped my life.

Ranger School is a journey of self discovery. You learn more of what you are made of, you find out you can keep going when you think you can't keep going and that scorpion stings are no big thing. It builds a good foundation for the rest of your life. And It's an excellent weight reduction opportunity.

I recycled in 9-92 from a squad of officers, into one of Bat Boys. Passed every patrol after that with a high peer rating. My Ranger Buddy was named Dyke from 2/75. He was one cocky, tough son-of-a-bitch. You do the math, kid.

You might want to change your screen name. Read the stuff in red in your first post. It will tell you why.
it was a completely different experience for Bat Boys than others.
Very true. The line company Rangers in my class felt, by and large, like it was just another workday. An extraordinarily looong workday, but nothing out of stride.
