Recycle Shame

Post by ZoneIV »

Ok...it is often stated on here that Airborne School is easy, etc. I do not disagree with this at all. My whole mindset was focused on upcoming Ranger School when I went through. Actually I was in the very last class that did Airborne School PT wearing leather boots. THe class motto was "Last in Leather". This was back in March of 83. That said, I must man up and confess that I was a recycle during Airborne School. I just need to get it off my chest.

Well my shame was the Swing Landing Trainer but there was an event that happened before that actually was the catalyst that led to my demise. First a little back story. The old BDUs were still rather "new" in 83. The Army couldn't make up its mind whether they should be pressed or not because for some reason if you pressed them, you can be picked up on radar or some shit like that. Shit...it is not as if the enemy will noticed me in my pressed BDUs before they notice the tank I am riding in.

Well at Ft. Knox, where I was at before Ft. Benning, it was sort of expected to have pressed BDUs. You really did look like a sack of shit if they weren't pressed. You would drop them off at the "Pickup Point" and they would come back cleaned and pressed. In case there are no longer "Pickup Points", I must explain that the "Pickup Point" was the post Dry Cleaners. You paid for them to launder/dry clean your clothes just like any other Dry Cleaners.

I got down to Ft Benning and I was in Airborne School a couple of days already before it happened. We had daily inspection by the Blackhats. Knowing how to be strac was nothing new to me. I had 4 years of it in College that included cleaning brass, etc. so that morning I was looking okay from head to toe. Sgt Airborne stood in front of me and looked me up and down and then started giving me crap.

"What did you do LT...spend all night pressing your BDUs"
"Don't you know that pressing BDUs is against Army Regulation" spit flying and what not and the chewing went on and on. Other Blackhats started circling around me like sharks around a kill so I knew the feeding fest was on. He couldn't get me to flinch, cut eyes or anything.

Well I was no stranger to having someone getting in my face and busting my chops. The school I went to made me immuned to this a long ways back but I did get a little ticked off because I knew he was just fucking with me to fuck with me (i.e. there was absolutely nothing wrong with my appearance) and in my best Airborne Trainee voice sounded off:

"No Sgt Airborne.....that is they way they came back from the FUCKING pickup point Sgt Airborne!!!

Well that got a chorus of ohhhhhhhhs from the circling sharks of Blackhats and the Sgt Airborne in front of me REALLY got pissed and proceeded with my "training" over in the gig pit. Well the gig pit was no big deal to me.

Well that same day during the Swing Landing Training, they dropped me in such a way that damn near made it was impossible for me to do a decent PLF so I got a NOGO at that station. I finished out the week and got recycled. It is funny how I had absolutely no problems getting a "Go" the next week.

It was the first and last time I got lit up for wearing pressed BDUs.

I just thought I would man up and confess this shame of actually being recycled through Airborne School for non-medical reasons.

The lesson for those who have not been to Airborne school is not to mouth off the the Blackhats.

Any other confessions out there????

...and now your having emotional issues?

I would have thought that you would have gotten over that decades ago, trying to claim PTSD over that little eposide?

I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life attempting PLFs off of that device. I'm not sure I ever performed a single proper, or recognizable, PLF once at that station. The cadre either got tired of seeing me slam into the ground or decided that I must've been immune to the effects of gravity & passed me along.

ZoneIV was not only a recyle, but an officer as well? Sustain the vote to ban. :P

My entire stick, from Private to Lieutenant, was recycled in Tower Week . When the officers in the stick explained this at our new training company it caused a little bit of a stir. Amazingly, my second week at the Tower Branch went without so much as a good smoking.

Nawh...the PTSD is not over this. It is the result of being Branched transferred later on away from Armor after my LT time and there was no such thing as "detailed combat arms" when I was coming along. That fucked up my head. Opps...perhaps this is not the best time to tell y'all that I eventually was forced to become an Ordnance Officer....

OK, so I'm confused, you didn't graduate Jump School, but you did 5-6 jumps in Ranger School?

I guess my sarcasm didn't shine through too well but then you grunts are a tad slow on the uptake at times.... Yes...graduated from Airborne School (5 jumps) and got 5-6 more in RS. My memory is a little fuzzy. So give me the obligatory "leg" comment. Zonk beat you to the punch on the chicken leg thing but you can throw in a "dumbass tanker" remark before moving out smartly...
