RWB2015 Introduction
Hello Rangers,
I am a twenty-two year old graduating college in May 2015. My focus of study is Poli Sci, specifically international relations and conflicts in the middle east. Becoming a Ranger in the 75th Ranger Regiment has been a path I have been interested in pursuing since high school. I promised my family I would always consider other options for their sake, which I did. But at a certain point a decision must be made, so I have begun talking to a recruiter. Although able to go the OCS path, I am not seeking that. Instead I am going the enlisted path and have requested an 11x Option 40 contract. My recruiter gave me the run around and underlined that they are hard to come by, and that I may have to wait a few months. He tried to push a 18x contract on me, however I stood my ground and told him I would hold out. I have yet to take the ASVAB and have scheduled it for mid May after I graduate. I assume after that we will schedule a date for MEPS processing. He also notified me that there were a few items I disclosed on my pre-screen that may cause some bumps in the road. I was hoping to get some other view points on how that may affect my processing.
The summer following my junior year I applied and was accepted in to a student internship at a federal agency. This required me to fill out a SF86 form. On this form I disclosed that I had inhaled marijuana on one occasion when I was a freshman in 2011. After going through the interview process they concluded that this was not cause for concern and that I did not exhibit drug seeking behavior. This one time event, although funny to some, is a F%$# up in my eyes, and not the type of person I am. I disclosed this incident on my pre-screen as well The recruiter told me by phone that this may cause some bumps in the road, and that we would discuss it more in person after I took the ASVAB. Part of him seemed to be acting sarcastic.
The second bump on my pre-screen goes as follows. As a young child of nine I was diagnosed with childhood asthma. However, by 10, 11 it had dissipated. There were absolutely no symptoms after/or even closely before 13. My father had had the same condition as I as a young child, and went on to lead an active life as a marathon runner as well as an active career in law enforcement without breathing problems. My parents treated me as any other child, and I competed on a swim team and rowed in college. I have been, ad remain extremely active and push myself with my workouts. I have not had any problems breathing problems for as long as I can remember. I go to a university where it is cold as hell, however this does not stop me running or doing PT outside. I understand I will most likely have to take a pulmonary function test to get a waiver, which I say bring it on. Have there been Rangers in the past who have had to go through this? Was I an idiot for disclosing this, since it was before 13?
As a side note I do a 0600 military fitness class a few days a week to complement my workout routine. I am currently around...
65 Pushups in 2 min
60 Situps in 2 min
2 miles in 13:32
I appreciate any input!

Your ambition is admirable and your introduction was decent.
Read and heed whatever guidance you are provided on this site.
You must be absolutely determined to never ever give up. Only you know what is in your heart and how determined you are.
Where do you reside and which school is conferring your degree?

Re: RWB2015 Introduction
Here is some feedback......your APFT scores suck! If you are going to have any hope of becoming a Ranger, you are going to have to add at least 20 more each to you pushup and setup scores, and cut 30 seconds off your run time. Get in to a good solid workout routine (there are some great ones here) and you shouldn't have any trouble. The most important part of preparation is mental.

Re: RWB2015 Introduction
The pot incident shouldn't be a barrier. You were right to disclose it then. Honesty is the best policy. While we like to assume the gov't has it's shit in order, and the DoD has access to previous screenings filled out with other agencies, the truth is they don't and it won't come up. I'd say your recruiter is just being a dick. He probably wants to use it as a tool to get you into an MOS that he needs to fill (versus what you want). Just shrug your shoulders when they ask and move on. It's not a big deal.
I'll let the recruiter's on the site address the asthma more in depth, but I read the current regs to say that you must be not be symptomatic after age 13. That's a question for you to answer. The question for the Army to answer is if you were formally diagnosed after age 13. From what you've submitted, you have not. Personally, I'd drop the topic entirely. Don't mention it again. Let them figure it out. If it isn't in your records, it never happened (remember this if you go into the service and get hurt). MEPS will screen you, the Army will screen you more...if asthma is there they'll find it. If not (and likely not), drive on.
11x Option 40 is the best path to go. 18 series is a great potential after your first enlistment is up, should you want that path. SF Babys (those who enlist 18 series) are good, but the gold standard has always been guys who went Rangers first, SF second. They're more well rounded soldiers.
I commend your decision. I think you'll find it to be the best one you've made in life thus far.
