Intro - Brian

Post by 110percentnoob »

Hey guys, thanks for the help ahead of time.

My name is Brian, I've grown up in the Boston area my whole life. I went to school out of state, graduated, moved back here... pretty normal for everyone I know. I always wanted to join the Army, specifically an Option 40 contract, but let myself get talked out of it. You know, the "Oh go to college first," check, "Oh well get a job first," check, "Oh well make sure you put in a few years so it looks good on your resume first...."

I guess one morning I woke up and realized if I keep letting other people make excuses for myself I'm never going to get anywhere in life, let alone join the military.

So I've got a pretty solid background with the degree, minor criminal background (public intoxication/open container from my college years) and I've been boxing since I was 19, so I'm in good shape.

The only thing I'm really nervous about is my age. I'm 26, going to be 27 in 2 months. Am I way too old to be joining up? Some people have told me anything over 21 is a disadvantage and works against you. A friend of mine is an O-3 in the Army, and he straight up said I shouldn't join solely based on my age.

I was looking around the web for answers and figured this is a solid place to ask for some real straight talk. Thanks ahead of time for any insight you guys can give me.

Make sure that you follow Ranger Jim's instructions first off. Second hopefully you realize this is not Facebook. Look around and do lots of searches. As for being old you are not old at that age. I enlisted at 34 years old married with 4 kids. I am now 36. The only thing that I can say is it seems it might slightly limit your MOS options. But figure out what you want first.

First, learn everything you can here. Second, your age won't matter. It can be a benefit (more maturity than other new guys you are with). But you have to be in shape, and you have to have heart. You have got to want to do it. Every damn day.
Pushups, situps, run, pullups. And every other muscle you can make sore. Make your lungs feel like you are breathing acid. Then run some more.
Work the brain out. All sorts of info to learn...might as well start now.

Welcome to ArmyRanger.com Brian. First lesson is to refer to the members here as Rangers, not guys. If you will look, listen and pay attention to details, you can learn a great deal here. First, read and heed the ROE PM I just sent you.

Ranger Ron, thank you for the PM. Should help shape me up on here.

I went ahead and ran an Army PT test as Ranger Jim said. 100 push ups, 98 sit ups, and a 2 mile run time of 12:08.

Thank you for the heads-up on age from Ranger Grim and Ranger Mike. That's been a big concern of mine, but it sounds like it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Brian,
You can do whatever you want to. You can never be too prepared. You have been told about physical, so do it! Have you memorized the Ranger Creed yet?

You have a very strong PT base-line. Did you use the link I provided to help with your MOS selection? Never, never quit!

"Learn the Standard, Meet the Standard, Exceed the Standard"

Your PT scores are somewhat good, now exceed them. Always improve. Pullups? Max number to muscle failure going all the way down.
Your weak area will be working on your BRAIN. Soak in all the KNOWLEDGE you can. LEARN all you can here.

110percentnoob - Please don't make short cuts out of our Ranger names for your convenience. The Rangers you disrespected are Ranger Grim666 and Ranger Mike11C11B who took the time to post in your introduction.
Do not take short cuts with any other Ranger names - you are now warned.

Please answer Ranger Cams' question.
Just curious if this kid's logged back in at all since these last questions were posed. Doesn't seem to be all that interested, unless he's in jail or his dog died.

His last log in was 19 June, so he has not been back this week.
