Intro - John

Post by j_setzler »

Hello Rangers, wives and all. Been in the army almost 2 years now with a wife and 3 kids. Current MOS is 25B (info tech specialist) and have been thinking about trying to become a Ranger myself.

Currently located at Ft. Huachuca, been here a year tomorrow. Why I want to become a Ranger: thought it would be an honor to be part of an elite brotherhood; would like to see more experiences that only a handful of soldiers see. PT score of 260 (not including todays test; so horrible I don't even want to talk about it). Not really much I can say about myself that I can automatically think of. Ask me and I would be able to tell.

Yes I've actually been looking around on a whole buch of different sites, mainly through Google, for info on the Rangers: their lifestyle, RASP, etc. However, there are a few questions I have that I've stumbled upon but with no luck on an answer.

Go on our site. We have a search feature, located on the top right of this page. You should be able to answer most of your questions.

I'm going to continue on with my searching but in the meantime, I'm going to go ahead and ask them here.

For the sake of my wife, what's the family life like, how often am I home (I understand I'd be gone a good bit on training missions when not deployed)?

Understanding that the Rangers are considered a light infantry unit, as a 25B (Info tech specialist), what would my duties be while stateside and deployed?

In conjunction with the previous question, while it's not a concern, do all Rangers see combat, regardless of MOS?

Again, I will be continuing my search for these plus additional questions I haven't thought about.

Scratch that last post, I found that it takes 6-8 weeks after submitting to get orders.

John,

As a newly enlisted (only 2 years in) 68W who is finishing up their training, and a husband with 4 kids, I can tell you that your wife's support will be paramount. With your MOS I am not 100% sure what you will do on a daily basis however, as with most things in regiment it will be longer days than regular army. Yes you are / can be deployed for a third of the year, however we choose to look at is as it is only 4 months every year as opposed to 12-18 months every 3 years. Now that things are drawing down you MAY have less chance being deployed however, Regiment will still deploy even to do training or whatever they see fit during that deployment time. From just the little I have seen there is no better life in the army than in Regiment. They have a great support group and do truly look out for your family. If you need more information please PM me. But make sure that your wife is 110% on board with your decision.
