Introduction - Old Guy

Post by dtjiii »

Hello all.

I graduated from Airborne School in 1972 and then Ranger School in August 1972. I believe it was class 901-73, the latter part of the summer.

I went on to FAOBC and graduated. Then with Vietnam winding down we had a formation at Ft Sill and were informed that the Army didn't need any 2nd Lts. Only West Pointers or those with the ROTC regular army commission were going to units. The rest of us went into the reserves with a 8 year obligation. That went away also as so many were flushed out of the Army that captains, majors and even Lt Col's wanted the reserve slots. A major wanted mine which was alright with me and I took early retirement. I've been an accountant since 1978.

I'm proud to say I have one son that is a medevac pilot (2 deployments). He is a Captain and has been with the 82nd.
My younger son is graduating from the medic AIT and has an option 40 contract (which is what attracted me to this site). It looks like he is in for a rugged life. He goes to Airborne school in a few weeks.

Neither listened to me, I told them don't go into the military unless they were really sure and if you do go into the Air Force!

Jim,
Thanks for the link. And it was my bad. The class was 901-72, finished in August 1971. Brings back memories. I have this same picture in my Class book they gave us - yes I still have it.

My service was of no consequence compared to what I've seen with my son's. BTW when my older son graduated from Airborne School I was the oldest parent graduate. I beat out a 2 star by several years.

Dan, Invite your son to this site. He will find it helpful at Fort Sam. And get yourself validated as a Ranger.
