PCU level 5

Post by fatboy »

Any one have any experience with the pcu level 5 in the snow or cold weather? Are they any good?
And secondly, does anyone know where to find some that won't cost me an arm and a leg?

The whole PCU system is awesome. It was designed by Mark Twight of Gym Jones fame and was originally made by Patagonia. At least the sets I have are. I can't say I've worn them in the snow but I've worn it all over the northwest and Afghanistan. They're good in cold weather. My preferred layering is silkies underneath the PCU 5 and you're pretty much set. As for buying a set, you can buy them on ebay but you're looking at around $300. The sets we're issued have to be turned in, so sorry about that. But if you can lay your hands on them for cheap or even better, free, do so.

*Also, tha Army is issuing a PCU 5 variant in mulitcam. I think it's only for deploying units. While not quite as good as the Patagonia PCU's, it's still a decent piece of kit.

Thanks for the info. Years back while in Iraq I was able to get ahold of a patagonia lvl 5 jacket that I still have, that is great for layering.
I'm mainly looking for the pants, I'll keep an eye out on ebay for cheap pairs.

The pants are good but make sure you have some suspenders for them.

PCU system is awesome, to echo what holmchicken said.
