no, it's 7th Cav Regt. From the days of Custer. it was a song sung by the troopers during marches and movements.

Ranger KW Driver, i understand it was 7th Cav. However, when I stated 1st Cav, I was referring to the fact that my best friends dad was in Vietnam with the 7th "Gary Owen" and they wore the 1st Cav patch. He also stated that Gary owen was the name of Custers horse. Don't know if it is true, however he stated that when he inprocessed into the unit that was part of the unit history they weree taught.
It's all good.

that is a fact, the 7th is in the 1st Cav. My friend from the Veteran's Administration Hospital was in the 7th. In the movie with Mel Gibson - We were Soldiers once was the 7th Calvary. In the Ir Drang Valley in 1965 at what was to be known as LZ Albany & LZ X-ray. This battle was considered a victory for the 7th Cavalary but a lot of men died over two days. I have seen their names on the wall in DC. My friend called those that died, my Buddies.

ok, 1-7 Cav is in 1 CAV Div.

We were Soldiers... again 1/7 CAV, and on the extraction 2/7 Cav got fucked up on the walk out...

I was in 3-7 Cav, 3ID Nov-03-Aug 04... 7th Cav (Gary Owen) has a long history.

Current Units:

1-7 Cav: 1st Cav Div as well as I know
3-7 Cav: 3ID (ground only, D, E, F 3-7 Cav (Air) disbanded Aug 04)
4-7 Cav: 2 ID ( Air Troops disbanding as of spring 05, don't know what the ground Troops ans HQ are doing)

Go Air Cav!! If you ain't CAV...

I always thought Commanche was the name of Custer's horse.

Garyowen is a tune(it is also a place) from Limerick, Ireland. If I remember the History Channel correctly, Custer had an Irsh Born 2IC that introduced the tune to the Regt.
