Yes Ranger school is seperate from RASP. Should your son complete RASP he will be assigned to one of the Ranger Battalions and IS considered a Ranger. At some point after that he should be given the opportunity to attend Ranger school and earn the Ranger tab, although that is by no means guarenteed.
My first Ranger was with the 1/75th, served a number of deployments, earned his tab, completed his time and moved on to work for XE formerly known as Blackwater private contracters. My second Ranger is with 3/75th and has currently just completed Ranger school approx one year after Passing RASP. Hope this helps, feel free to message me any furthur questions you may have.
