Glock 20 10 mm

Post by rangerjd »

I do a lot of hiking, camping and horseback riding up here in the great Northwest, not to mention at least one trip a year up to Alaska to visit my son. I usually carry my 1911 .45 cal to the woods with me should I encounter a bear, mountain lion, Bigfoot or any other creator seeking to do me harm. I've been informed by several guides, outdoorsmen and the like that a . 45 acp round is not enough round for a bear if he/she is highly pissed off, so the search began for a new woods gun. I originally was looking at a .44 mag or possibly a .357 when I started reading about guides in Alaska and the lower 48 that carry a 10 mm for backup, not to mention that Park Rangers in Iceland carry it for Polar Bear protection. The more I checked into it the more I liked it. I looked at the different types of 10 mm handguns and decided on the Glock 20 Gen 4. It came with 3 15 round mags, a nice case and some accessories. The first thing I did was take it shooting. I fed it several different defense round, some 180 gr target rounds and 3 different bear loads. I took everything I fed it and asked for more. The recoil is about the same as my 1911, except for the bear loads which are a little stouter. It is a pleasure to shoot and it'll shoot out to 50 feet very accurately. Did I mention it carries 15 rounds of 10 mm. I bought one extra mag and I keep 3 mags loaded with HPR Defensive Line 10mm 180 Grain XTP HP rounds and 1 mag loaded with Buffalo Bore 10mm Auto 220 Grain Hard Cast Flat Nose rounds. It weighs, fully loaded what my 1911 weighs empty, 39 oz. It has become not only my new woods gun, but my new home defense pistol as well. I bought it at Surplus Ammo and Arms in Tacoma for $450.00 with the LE/Military special. I'm now saving my money so I can buy the Lone Wolf 6" barrel to use when I'm carrying in the woods with the bear loads. Happy Hunting all.

Sounds like you got yourself a keeper JD. Good deal. Is 10mm easy enough to find these days? I thought it had died out years ago as a passing fad.

For whatever reason, 10mm is making a comeback of sorts. Actually had a 10mm show up at one of our local USPSA matches last month.

I can get 180 gr FMJ for about $25 for a box of 50, and $20 to $30 a box(20) for 220 gr bear loads. I found some Sig HP ammo 180 gr for about $30 a box. Sorry it took so long to respond. I took an extended vacation where the wife and I agreed to stay off of the electronics and focus on each other. Had a great time, I might add. She just finished her Master's Degree Program, so I took her up to Harrison Hot Springs, in Canada. No kids, no dogs, no horses, just her and I, the mountains and the hot tubs. I would recommend it to anyone. Canadian gun laws suck though. Can't carry anything that is designed for self defense, to include a can of mace. You can carry bear spray, but it can't be used on people. You can carry a knife, but it must be used as a tool, not carried for self defense. DON'T get me started.
