Gas ring issues

Post by cams »

Buddy of mine just bought a new Stag Arms AR (5.56 NATO) and he brought it to the range the other day with me to have some fun time.

Soon as he started firing his first mag, rifle jammed up and wouldn't fire.

We broke it down, checked ammo (good 5.56 and matched caliber of rifle, not .223)

Took out the BCG and the gas rings were wrecked. Torn out and bent.

We changed out his rings, checked them, all good. Fired again and same thing. Took the BCG out and the rings were destroyed again. Pulled out, bent and junk.

Neither of us are armorers so we set it aside and went to another weapon to continue the fun.

What could cause the rings to destroy like that so quickly and is it an easy fix or should he just send it back to Stag?

Sounds like an issue with the inside of the carrier. Maybe the rings are sticking to an improperly machined surface and being torn off as the bolt moves in and out of the carrier. Also, could be a chamber/ammo issue where there is excessive pressure on the rings from trying to extract a tight fitting/stuck cartridge. YES, send it back!

Roger that. Sounds beyond our ability to fiddle with it and fire it again safely.
