Remington model 870

Post by PocketKings »

Anyone use? Thoughts? Better options? I'm looking for a home defense piece that I can take out skeet shooting from time to time. Nothing serious, mind you, just a few buds and some clay pigeons.

This is a Rem 870 Wingmaster Riot Gun with 20 inch barrel and 7 round magazine that I picked up for $175. It has very little wear from use, but some dings and minor pitting from spending twenty years in a patrol car. If you ever compare the Wingmaster to the Express you will notice that the Wingmaster is built like a Swiss watch while the Express is a little less quality. I could buy a Speedfeed stock and a fancy barrel and still have a lot less in it than the price on the web page you just posted. Do you really need the breaching barrel anyways ? My advice is to find a police trade-in. A lot of police departments are trading in their perfectly good riot guns for the high speed tactical shotguns, so there are plenty of good deals out there.

Nice. I'm not above upgrading the stock, I'm more concerned with the gun. I'm also all about saving money and getting quality goods.

Where might I get a police trade-in? Local gun shop?

A gun shop might be a place to start. Auctionarms.com, gunbroker.com I bought mine from a gun list mailed out by a gun dealer from Texas.

I've had both the wingmaster and the express. They both ran like champs. The wingmaster that I had came into service with my agency in 1967  It was issued to me in 2000, I traded it in for a more high speed set up, but that gun is still in our inventory. 8)

I've had an 870 for years. Recently got a police trade-in that was butt ugly for $100.

You can pick one up used for between 1-250 with a little hunting.

Get a 18-20 inch barrel and then at least a 26 inch barrel for busting clays.

This is another option available from WalMart for around $300. I bought this for hunting, but since it has a fairly short barrel at 21" and interchangeable chokes it can be a sport or defense firearm. I have claimed 2 turkey and about six dozen squirrel with it.

Not too shabby. So, the general concensus seems to be that the 870 is a good piece.

I own and have owned a couple. They're GREAT in either the Express or Wingmaster, IMO.

I personally like the Mossberg 500 I use. It came (out of the box) with a pistol grip and stubby barrel (~20 inches), and a standard length barrel and grip (for duck & goose hunting).

With one allen wrench, I can quickly convert to home defense (for the wife) with 3 inch mag. shells or standard length and take out on the migratory bird hunt.

Can't go wrong with an 870. But as Brute brings up, the Mossies are also a fine choice and easy on the pocketbook.

Resale value tends to be better for a Remington 870 than a Mossberg.

The Remington model 870 is in my opinion (8 years-11F4SVS and 24 years civilian L.E.), the finest home defense weapon available. It is powrerful. easy to shoot (point and pull the trigger), rugged and has a long history of reliability (over 60 years).

I have never experienced a malfunction with the weapon except for the magazine extensions that law enforcement insisted on during the late seventies. The aluminum extensions would dent and cause the spring to kink and not feed reliably.

I've taught hundreds of law enforcement students to shoot this shotgun and have never had a problem of it not meeting the needs of the student.

I have one loaded with 00-Buck in my home along with a 1911A1.

AOW's (Any Other Weapon) aren't for everyone, but they can be useful in the right situation. Believe it or not, they aren't too bad to shoot either. If a .44 mag recoil doesn't bother you, these won't either:
