Your recruiter sounds confused. Talk to someone else. SSG Plavney gave some informative responses related to prior service on my early posts. Check those.

Blackhawk Down, or front-leaning rest?

I've just begun reading this book, and I'm already put off by the way Bowden describes the Rangers vis-a-vis the "D-boys." All of his descriptions of Rangers as youngsters looking fawningly up to the "D-boys" like some kind of superheroes seems unrealistic. I know when I was in t...

In the Marines I was stationed at Twentynine Palms, CA. It's a shitty little base in the armpit of California methamphetamine country, in the high desert. At the south end of the base is the sewage treatment plant, 4 or so large lakes that smell strongly of sewage, with a 1.5 mile track around it. T...

PFT test

Well, this is a pretty funny story I think. On Saturday I took my DEP APFT test. Me and all the young DEP'pers piled into a van with the recruiter (who is some kind of technician), and headed about an hour South of town to the field (near the CO's house) where the APFT is administered. On the way do...

Making the comment that and Ranger Batt. would retain undesirables by assigning them to a specific unit or squad is far fetched and is insulting. Didn't mean it that way. I just meant that in every unit there are some new guys who are going to be good, they just need some growing pains. I was guess...

They're letting me in, and I had it, so yes is the answer to your question. You'll have to go see an ortho to make sure its actually healed/repaired. If he clears you, then you're waivered and you're in.

After re-reading my last post, I would like to rephrase one part. I didn't mean shitbirds -- I assume the shitbirds wash-out. I guess I meant is it the kind of place they stick those who are regarded as needed a little extra-motivation. EP answered my question, but I wanted to clarify my meaning/cor...

buddylee, You may want to consider the surgery and as much rehab as it takes to get it back to 100% before joining. I blew my ACL 2 years ago, and at the time thought me knee would never be the same. But now, after a year of strong rehab and a lot of PT, it feels as good as new. It's been a long roa...

Carl-Gustav

Any Rangers here use the Carl-Gustav? With all due consideration to OPSEC, any comments about its relative strengths, weaknesses compared to the Dragon and AT-4? I would guess it is somewhere in the middle for range, lethality, etc.

ASPs and other blunt instruments

Hey Jody, While I was an MP there was one piece of gear I always thought would be useful in the infantry: the ASP police baton. For those who don't know, the ASP is lightweight, telescopic, metal baton. We were strongly advised against using the baton against the torso/head during training because o...

Wpns Section vs. Line Companies

I was talking privately to tankkiller about this on airborneranger, and thought this was a topic of enough general interest to merit a public discussion. When you get to battalion, how is it determined whether or not, or who, goes to a weapons platoon as against a rifle platoon? Are most of the mort...

Relax snapper, it'll come. And, when it does, at least you can have the satisfaction of knowing your $20 won't wind up in the paycheck of some anti-war dickweed.

I've got one. I read in an article on SF soldiers that they are all trained in a close-combat technique known as LINE (which is an acronym for something I don't recall). What is LINE? Is it an adaptation of a specific martial art, or an amalgam of various styles? Also, is this technique limited to S...

Re: No Shit

Leatherneck is pretty smart for someone who can stick his head into a Mayonaise jar... Mayonnaise jar!!!! Shit, that's for PFCs. To make E4 in the USMC you've got to be pass the mustard jar test. Now that's a good grape squeezer! (If you think that's bad, to get those butter bars you've gotta be ab...

Fartlek (that's seriously the name). Alternating sprints and running. Basically, go and run 3 miles, but alternatively sprint for 30 seconds/jog for 1 min/sprint for 30 seconds/jog for 1 min/ etc. for the whole 3 miles. I know some guys who traithlon and marathon competetively and that's what they d...
