Airborne School

It was a bit of a blur. I went there directly from AIT training. When I got there, they were between cycles, so we did "police detail' along the roads leading into Benning to help "beautify" the area. That was a week. And then ground, tower, and jump week. Each phase has it's own stan...

Crap on Patrol

It was during an ARTEP, we were about 600 m from the obj, and one of my young troops, a PR, was doubled up in cramps from holding. I told him he had ten seconds to let it rip or break it off with an e-tool. He did, minus a wool glove insert, and we continued the mission.

Weights

There are guys like that. My experience has been that the heavier guys don't make it. Long distance runners and swimmers do. There may be exceptions. In any case, you've gotta want it.

Underwear

Dittos on the previous message. I've cut undergarmets off of troops in the field as their balls swelled. It's a NO GO.

Retreads

I truly don't know how many times you have. I suppose that's up to the cadre. I know guys that were recycled for medical reasons, and failure to get a GO on 50% of their patrols. I know of one guy that was there six months before he got his tab. I'll say this: Don't get a slot and come back to Batt ...

Life in Batt

Dittos on what was said by others. It's a Spartan life. You do it or you don't. No U turns. Have a good one.

Pre-Ranger

I went through a pre-ranger class at 2nd Batt in '77. It was okay, but it didn't focus on W/Orders and OPORDs like it does in Ranger School. When I came back, class 10-77, Capt. J.J.Maher asked myself, and several others to come up with an outline for pre-ranger to help with the washout rate in Rang...

Asking what weapons are good is one thing, asking what one has personally is another. Any way, why are you interested in an M1?

Ditto on that. You'll get what you need to break things quite well.

I hope you're in good shape. Lot's of running, X-C courses, pushups, guerrila drills, and then more of the same. When you're in the field it's jumping in at night with a very heavy ruck, carrying all of your gear day and night, plus that of the guys that get hurt or can't hang. It really gets intere...

Delta

I definetly agree with the one step at a time approach. It takes more, a lot more, than saying you want to do something. There is no "E" for effort. It requires a mental toughness that you either have by now and it will be uncovered, or you don't. Extreme mental toughness, fighting isolati...

A Ranger Born

I met Roy Black during one of my own book promos. He's a good guy and it's a good book.
