I never earned the Ranger tab. I am a veteran of Desert Shield and Storm, but sad to admit, I am just a leg.
I served in 1st Armored, and was in the Gulf from December 90 to May 91. My intel team was attached to the lead battalion of the lead brigade of 1st AD throughout the ground war.
I was a combat intel team leader (we didn't have squads, we had platoons of 4 teams) in A Co, 501st MI Bn.
When I went to language school, I met guys from 10th Group SF, and many of them had terrific stories about Ranger School. We sent a LT once TDY to Ranger School, and he washed out. He was one of the toughest, most physically fit guys I knew, but he washed out. Something about a loaf of bread beneath a tree. I never really understood the whole story. ha ha.
We had an LRSD company in the 501st MIB, Delta company actually. They took the first wounded in Desert Storm. I believe the first of them wounded was John Steele.
Anyway, enough boring stories. Those of you deploying, if a lowly leg can give some advice . . . listen to your NCOs and remember your training. It'll keep you in one piece.
Best,
Kevin St. Jarre

My MOS . . .
I was a 98G2LCX etc etc
D/501st MIB was called "Delta company" but the always referred to themselves as a "detachment"
They called themselves LRSD, I don't know why not LRSC.

Welcome.98G..that's a linguist, right?
Usually, all D Co's in MI Bn are LRSD.
They're the Divisions' asset.
LRSC are a Corps asset.
We're all sneaky bastards.

Yeah, it's a linguist, working SIGINT.
I didn't know any Night Stalkers before writing the book. They can be tough to find. ha ha. I've talk to some since starting to write the books. It's actually a 3-book series. Book 1 comes out in Jan 2005.
