Welcome to ArmyRanger.com, Beetle1. Thanks for your service to our great country! Did you happen to be in Class 3/71? I graduated in October of '69 in Class 3/70. Seems to me that there is someone else here that was in Class 3/71.

Don't mind Ron, he rambles a lot when he doesn't take his meds properly.

Re: Intro
My apologies, the original intro was rather weak so here's a little more detail. I enlisted September 1969 and went to Ft. Jackson, SC for Basic and AIT. Afterwards I went to Ft. Benning for NCO School (NCOCC class 41-70 I think) and graduated July of 1970. This was followed by Jump School and from there straight to Ranger School. I cannot recall which RC I was in, but graduated in October 1970. After Ranger School I received orders for Vietnam and in mid-December 1970 was assigned to the 1st of the 5th Mech, Quang Tri where I immediately volunteered for Papa Company Rangers. Led team 1-9 until P/75 stood down in August 1971. I was then transferred to SERTS (101st Screaming Eagle Replacement Training School) at Camp Eagle near Phu Bai for the remainder of my tour and left RVN December 1971. The next duty station was Ft. Hood, TX where I volunteered for Alpha Company Rangers. I was in A/75 until an early out was offered and left 2/24/1972 after 2 1/2 years of active duty.

Welcome!ZoneIV wrote:X2.....you certainly did a lot in 2 1/2 years. I wasn't aware that they would pick people out of AIT and send them immediately to NCO School.Jim wrote:Wow!
You have much in common with RangerRon, he followed a similar path if not the same to NCO status and Ranger School. I was a Training Officer with the 81st NCOC Company from April through December 1968.

There were. The Sergeants who led the army in WWII and Korea voted with their feet. I was promoted from E-1 to E-6 in three and a half years (November 1968). I met the minimum time in service and grade when I was 26 years old for promotion to E-7 and went to the MAC-V promotion board (at that time we had boards up to E-9). The president of the board, a SGM asked how old I was and told me to come back when I was 30 years old. I had my own timetable, so I went to OCS. I retired when I was in my 30th yare os service as an LTC, at age 50.Beetle1 wrote:Must have been a real shortage of noncoms in 1970.ZoneIV wrote:X2.....you certainly did a lot in 2 1/2 years.
