Let's Talk Energy Drinks.....

Post by RTO »

Use em? Like em? Hate them? Used best when combined with vodka?

Let's hear it. What is your opinion on the current crop of energy drinks out there?

I have tried several of them (like Red Bull, 5 Hour Energy etc......) over the last cuppla years and the only thing they did for me was lighten my wallet by $2-3 bucks a pop. No significant improvement over say a cup of coffee or a Mountain Dew or similar. But then I've never had one when I really 'needed' one either till the other day.

I was at work after about one hour of sleep (moonlighting, I had took on a temp. part time overnight job) and on my break went over to the nearby 7-11 to get a cup of coffee.

After the clerk asked me if I had been up all night he handed me an energy drink I'd never tried before, 'Spike'.

It's main claim to fame is it carries 25,000 % over the daily reccomended dose of vitamin B12. It's slogan says once you've tried it you'll never go back to the rest.

Anyways, to make a long story short, it worked GREAT. Cleared the 'fog' and woke me right up. After about 15 minutes on the stuff, I felt like I had a full 8-9 hours sleep, with no 'crash' later in the day.

I prefer Monster Assault. Though original flavored Monster is good too, just not as good. It's been known to keep me awake long after I should have fallen asleep. No "crashing" effect noted.

I go for a combo of strong black coffee and alot of Mountain Dew. Mountain Dew has a pretty good energy drink, and their MDX is great. A new one, that really isn't an energy drink but works ok is Diet Pepsi Max.

I usually just drink a lot more water, to the point I have to piss every 15-30 minutes. If that's not enough...coffee. I hate coffee and almost never drink it, so on the rare occasion that I do, it kicks right in. I've never tried any of the energy drinks, I guess, because I think they're sweet, like soda, which I don't like.

25,000% B12 sounds crazy, but:
What is the health risk of too much vitamin B12?
The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies did not establish a UL for this vitamin because vitamin B12 has a very low potential for toxicity. The IOM states that "no adverse effects have been associated with excess vitamin B12 intake from food and supplements in healthy individuals" [7]. In fact, the IOM recommends that adults older than 50 years get most of their vitamin B12 from vitamin supplements or fortified food because of the high incidence of impaired absorption in this age group of vitamin B12 from foods that come from animals [7]. --http://dietary-supplements.info.nih.gov ... minb12.asp

I never have cared for the energy drinks, unless I'm drinking Red Bull in a Jager bomb, and then I'm not drinking it for energy or to stay awake, . Mt. Dew works as a pick me up for me.

The other half sticks with coffee.

Drinking some dark roast strong coffee and eating a bag of M&M's works as well as any of the energy drinks I've tried, and tastes a lot better.

Beer.
Might not do much for your energy level, but quaff a few & you won't care.

On a serious note, despite me being a coffeeholic, Bravo57's comment about the apple is right on, plus you can't spill an apple. My snack bag seldom has candy but always bears fruit.
