Ranger contract or not

Post by jmatts »

Rangers-

I'm 37, and will be joining the Army within the next week and am in need of some advice. I am committed to a combat MOS and want a realistic shot at becoming a Ranger.

First, my SITREP is as follows:

6'1," 220
push-ups-81
sit-ups- 78
2 mile run- 18:41 (needs work)
pull-ups- 16

My question is: do I sign-up for 4 yrs. as an 11X, go to Airborne school, deploy and gain some combat experience and then try to get a slot to earn my Ranger tab. Or, do I sign-up for the 40 contract and get a "try-out," without experience? Age is not on my side. If I go 11X with no guarantee of RIP, how do I know I'll get another shot. As a civilian, I have no idea how the Army works. I know there are no guarantees, but I want to even the playing field as best I can.

My concern about straight infantry is that most will not be committed to war fighting like the Rangers, meaning they're more worried about buying their first car and less worried about going to war.

No disrespect, but if you lay with dogs, you'll get fleas.

Please advise.

Also, I could use a mentor.

Thanks,

jmatts

With your overarching experiance in "WARFIGHTING". I am sure the rest of this forum would be interested in your explaination of the subject.

I cant begin to tell you how fucked up your statement is even though I have read it 9 times. There are kids who volunteer every DAY knowing they will be going to war ....and you at the advanced age of 37....talk of laying down with DOGS and getting flese.....FUCK you.....

Where the hell where you during Desert Storm ????

...or Somalia???

...or Hati

....or Kosovo

...Bosnia ?.....

This war has only been going on for the last 4 FUCKING years..

Your 37 AND now you want to impress someone with your desire to show up to the fight ? Then you talk down to "mere" INFANTRY .....

Bite my ass....you fucking clown.....

1st, this is not a request. It'll be your next post.

2nd, Mr. know it all, you have found a mentor if he'll have you, in Old Grunt.

Grunt, I like you more, every post you make.

3rd, what my SGM said. I'm 37, and have been serving for 15 years. bout time you man'd up, regardless of your fucked up reasonings. hopefully you'll unfuck your attitude quickly.

ADMINS: can we move this to the civilian intros since Mr. Johnie come lately, know it all, here to save the Army can't pay attention to detail.

So, you're calling my last squad a bunch of shitbags?

Yeah, they dumped their cash after we got done. Every one of those dumb privates was flat broke a month after we got back to the States.

But, while we were in Iraq, they did their damn jobs. They had plenty of moments where I wanted to beat or choke them and several times where I actually did. But, my platoon was on IED and insurgent-filled roads, getting hit around twice a week, on average, with one streak where we got hit every fucking day for two weeks, as convoy security.

We never once lost a man. Not one of ours, not one of the people we were escorting. People got hurt. People got fucked up. But we got wounded patched up and to the aid station fast as hell. Security was maintained. Aside from a few cool scars, none of my boys got hurt. Because they did their jobs and they were focused on the fight.

Rangers are elite. Rangers are the best Infantry unit in the world.

But, don't ever fucking make the mistake of thinking that every other unit is trash. There's a reason why Veterans are treated with respect on these forums.

And get used to the idea of a guy in his mid-20s yelling at you and kicking your ass when you fuck up (and you will). Because if you go in, someone just like me is going to be on your case.

JMatts: I would also add, that your original message was posted in the "Rangers, Veterans, Ranger Wives/Parents" forum, and you do not appear to be any of those.

Additionally, beyond glory-hunting, why at the age of 37 would you want to do this? I admit, that I'm 38 - and in excellent physical condition (for a FOG), but I'd never want to compete with 18-early twenty-somethings in an Infantry capacity. :?: :?:

jmatts, a man has only one opportunity to make a favorable initial impression. To say you failed is an understatement. Old Grunt gave you a great deal of information as did a number of other Rangers. I assure you that you can get through the Ranger course at 37; my former Sergeant Major graduated with his tab at age 39. Frankly, that is an exceptional event -- but it can and has been done. There is nothing wrong with serving as a member of a non-airborne or non-Ranger unit -- I have in both wartime and peace.

Sergeant Major Rgrpuck hit it on the head. Why have you waited so long to do your duty?

Much like the SGM said, I'm fucking speechless. I cannot fathom a man comparing our young brethren who are laying lives on the line this very moment, to fucking dogs. I'll not waste another breath on you save to say this, tread softly. Those "Dogs", as you so eloquently put it, are the only reason you sleep at night and speak freely without fear of punishment or retribution. But not here bud, though your age is senior to most, your words identify you as an impetulant child whose lacks the experience is met only with your apparent lack of restraint. You'll be lucky if Old Grunt will even have you. While you're at it, why don't you scroll down a little and read the post he made a couple of days ago about the Infantry.
