Civilian Introduction
Hello,
My name is Eric. I'm a 25 year old math graduate student with no military experience. I knew a Ranger in undergrad and his stories made me interested in learning more about the training. This site has provided a lot of in depth information on that training and also taught me more about military life, something which I know little about.
I only posted to say thank you for all the information on this site and also to thank the Rangers and all the other military personnel on these forums for their service to our country.
Now, back to lurking.

Although it doesn't entail the risk and sacrifice of being in the military, I'm looking into the possibility of working for the NSA when I graduate in about two years. However, since my research area isn't directly applicable to their work, that may not work out. If I instead become a professor, which I'm also considering, I don't currently have a plan as to how I can serve our country.

Thank you for being honest, instead of tap dancing around or coughing up excuses.Lathos wrote:Ranger Bill,Ranger Bill wrote:So when are you going to do your part? And how?

You might consider a doing single tour as an MI officer doing sigint work.
There's reserve component options also in intel fields in all four services.
A good geek can be responsible for killing more bad guys or saving more good guys than legions of grunts. Look into it.

Ranger K. Ingraham,
Thank you for the suggestions and the information.
If I become a professor, I'll probably have to do so directly. Otherwise, my research will be out of date and I'll be unlikely to find a job. The work of an MI officer looks interesting though, so if I don't become a professor I'll look into it for a tour or as another possible career.
If I take a civilian job out of college, the reserves seem like they would be a fulfilling option.
These suggestions have given me a lot to think about. I'll look into them.

just my .02 cents:
Service can be given in many ways. It doesn't have to be military. The key in my opinion is to give back to the community. Doesn’t really matter how. Get involved in something bigger than yourself, that doesn't benefit you directly. Build houses for Habitat; volunteer your time at the VA or some other hospital. Volunteer somewhere for something. Teach/help underprivileged kids.
If you do nothing more than become a professor, teach honestly. It’s easier in math, since it’s a pure science, but teach them to think, not regurgitate. Don’t teach your political agenda in the classroom. I’m sure you know what I’m saying.
The key is to give back to the community and country, not just take advantage of the privileges that we have here.

Welcome. Depending on what you are doing with your math, you may also have a possibility of serving by working for one of the various defense contractors. We always need guys that can solve tough algorithms for sensor fusion, encryption, and the like.
