AAU State Karate Championships

Post by Nija »

The team from The Dojo, Myrtle Beach SC attended the Amateur Athletic Union Karate State Championships in Raleigh, NC this past weekend.
The competitors made a great showing and took home a ton of gold medals and 3 all around titles. Congrats to Bruce, Lexis, and Caleb for there titles.

The kid (my son Lance) competed in two divisions Kata and Sparring.

The Kata competition was set up as a heads up elimination. Basically you and another competitor go at it head to head and then the judge's vote on who performed the best.

Now anyone that knows Lance will know that he sucks at Kata, he does not like to train on them at all, and all he wants to do is fight. He went through two rounds and only made a minor mistake (prepared with wrong hand on top) luckily his opponents were not as solid as he and he swept both rounds. I must say that I was very proud of his performance and the Gold medal he won was very well deserved. On a side note his instructor who was judging in another ring about fell out of his chair when made aware of the fact that the kid won gold.

The sparring competition was set up as a 3 point match with ½ points and full points awarded. The kid's first fight was a very easy one for him. Right off the line Lance came in with a back leg front kick followed by a one two punch. He scored with all three moves however in point sparring only the first solid technique counts. Score is one to nothing. On the command of Hadjime (start) he comes off the line with the exact same move and once again the exact same results 2 to nothing. Lance attempts to get fancy with his next point. On the command Hadjime he starts floating backward in an attempt to bait his opponent well that works the other fellow comes in at him and lance attempts a back leg round house kick to the head … he misses and the other fellow almost caught his leg. Lance floats back then comes in with old faithful back leg front kick followed by the one two combination. This worked once again final score 3 to zero.

Lance's second fight would prove to be a little more interesting. His opponent was about a head and a half taller than Lance and had a considerable reach advantage. As we began off the line both are floating back and forth waiting to see who will make the first move, Lance is not the most patient fighter so after about 10 seconds of waiting he charges in and jumps upward to hit the guy in the head but misses, the guy is still backpedaling so Lance follows up with about a 5 punch combination until one of them finally lands. Score is one to nothing. Off the line we go for the second point opponent moves in with a reverse punch to the head but misses Lance counters with a front hand jab followed by an over hand right . The jab missed however his opponent's counter hit Lance in the gut to his credit the over hand right did snap the other guy's head back. Score is now 1 to 1.

Here we go all tied up as we come off the line his opponent throws a front leg round house kick followed by a reverse punch and he catches nothing but air. Opponent comes in again with a half way thrown reverse punch Lance counters with a 10 punch combination yes I counted them it was 10. Around about punch 4 Lance landed but kept on firing until the guy was out of the ring. Score is now 2 to 1. Hadjime both fighters float for a bit then opponent moves in with a reverse punch that misses Lance drives forward with a counter that misses and then he eats a reverse punch to head. I must admit it was a good shot that he took right to the head. Score is now 2 to 2. Next point wins the championship. Opponent fires off the line this time Lance does not give ground so the other guy then takes a step back. While backing up Lance charges and lands a solid shot right to the grill of the guy. In classic Lance fashion he continues with about 4 more punches. Lance is the winner final score 3 to 2. Lance's fighting record is now 16 and 0.
