Intro
I was in wpns sqd 1st plt A Co. 3/75 from Sep 2000 thru May 2002. I had the fucking time of my life as a private in batt. We got smoked endlessly and made the absolute best of it. In August 2001, I started with Ranger School class 11-01. Half of the way through Darby phase we learned of the events of Sept. 11. We (batt boys) had a kind of council that night. We were all left with the decesion of staying and finishing Ranger School or dropping and going back to our units which were sure to be deployed soon. I continued through the end of Mountain phase until finally I could bear the thought of my brothers in combat and myself not there. I told the R.I. I wanted to go back to my unit. In my mind, Ranger School would always be there and combat was a lifetime oppuritunity. I got back to 3rd Batt and everyone was already deployed. "Rear D" on a real-world mission! I was told that I had made the wrong decision in attempt to join my squad in combat and that I may face discharge from the unit when everyone returned. Most of the battalion returned by February 2002. I was allowed to stay, under the circumstances, most of the senior NCOs in the company understood and appreciated my intent. Soon after all the boys got back, we were all out celebrating and I got a DUI bringing some buddies back on post. Well, th e 1st SGT couldn't save me from that one and I was cast out of batt and as further punishment I spent 2 years and one OIF deployment on Kelly Hill! YEAH suck on that!!!
There is nothing I miss more than my time in battalion. It is a great comfort for me to know we still have units like these working to maintain our freedoms around the world. RLTW
