Ranger Jim and Ranger Steadfast, I will for sure keep you updated on his progress. They returned to PRC today for one last APFT which he passed with no issues. So nothing left to do but stay hydrated, focused, motivated, and head to Ft Benning this weekend.

Re: 7 Jan 2013
Ranger Jim, I sure am although I have really thought about letting my brother pin it on. My brother is a Ranger and it would mean a lot to me to see my brother pin my son. I haven't decided yet. My brother was joking telling me winter Rangers get to sew their tabs on with white thread.

Re: 7 Jan 2013
Well my son didn't pass land nav so he is back at FT Bragg. He only found 2 of the 4 points. He is already scheduled to return to PRC at Ft Bragg on February 25th and Ranger school on 21 April. Not sure what happened with land nav. Based on what he told me they never really get any training on land nav. In fact about a month ago his PLT jumped in at Sicily DZ and then walked around all night for six hours because their PL couldn't find the objective. I asked my son why the PLT SGT or SL never stepped upped and took charge. He had no idea. Maybe the NCOs were trying to teach the LT a lesson but I think failing to reach your objective is just BS. Not sure how he can get further training in land nav on his own. No matter what he isn't going to quit and will keep working out and get ready for PRC and Ranger school.
If anyone has any suggestions on land nav training I'll gladly pass it on.

The biggest thing is practice. He probably knows what he needs to succeed he just needs the practical experience to apply and more importantly trust his skills.
Land Nav (especially now when we GPS everything) is perishable and not as easy as people think.

Why didn't some one fix the PL? Because everyone spent the last ten years riding a HMMWV/MRAP following a GPS. They either never learned how or forgot to navigate.

My son just came off active duty and is currently in the Louisiana Guard. Little asshole can't land nav his way out of a wet paper bag. He said in Afghanistan they just used Garmins when they were dismounted and the digital systems when they drove.

Re: 7 Jan 2013
Lost art. I made my guys do old school land nav in training, and all of them had to have a map/compass/protractor as a part of the PCIs/PCCs checklist. But sadly too many leaders have forgotten that tech and batteries fail.
