Vet, enlisted in '80 with B Co, 3 Bn/161st Inf(M), 81st BDE (remember when unit designations were so simple?), with parental permission at 17. Needless to say I had an unusual 'summer camp' before senior year. My only mistake was letting the CO and 1st Sgt talk me into being the 75B due to my 'high' ASVAB scores (remember, this was the Army of 1980 - a force trying to figure out how to make a volunteer system work). It was fine with a Guard unit with a full time administrator (so I could play at Ft. Lewis or Yakima Firing Center with everybody else), but going active duty as a 75B was another thing. The wouldn't even let me retrain as a bullet stopper. Just as well. I found out in boot camp that eyewear can be a major headache/detriment in combat arms. So, I spent 4 years in the AF to complete my active duty.

Why am I here? I have a long interest in all things military, and have fond memories of being set upon (and vice versa) by Ranger elements at Ft. Lewis. I'll always support out military members to the hilt. It's a shame the average person has no clue what sacrifices our servicemen and women make.
