A guy who is that scared to be racing shouldn't be on the track..he is a danger and at least he did it for his teammates' sake too. If he isn't confident in his abilities then I think he did the right thing. Some people just lose the nerve.

That said, if I'm his teammate, then I'm probably pissed.

I have often been intrigued by the differences / similarities between fear and adrenaline. Thought myself a pussy at times for thinking that I was afraid of something and then realized it was adrenaline. Recognized my own fear on many other occasions. Sometimes a night jump just didn’t feel right, but I went out the door.

Watched a few 4 man sled teams roll over yesterday and they all seemed to remain intact and uninjured. Its not like the bobsled. I think this guy is a disgrace and would be furious had I supported that that team.

Being scared is OK. Being scared shitless is OK too. There wasn't a mission I went out on in I Corps where I wasn't scared shitless on the way. It's called fight or flight. It's our most innate instinct. We chose to let our fight dominate our overwhelming desire for flight -to not be there. That's what made us Rangers. Every one of us chose to overcome our fear -to face down our fear. Some people can do that, some bobsledders can't.

Some have said that it was "brave" of him to quit. On the other hand, some may argue that this act of quitting was self-centered and selfish. When reading this article, I just thought of the number of soldiers in combat (past or present) who have been scared shitless, for far better reasons, but kept driving on in order to not let down their buddies (their "team"). Their concern for their buddies outweighed their own fear of getting killed.

I fully agree. But that trait is what makes them Soldiers and not civilian bobsledders.

What I also find amazing is how many US Bobsledders are currently or were in the US Army/World Class Athlete Program.
