Excellent monograph. BTW, I have been unable to find copies of Larteguy's books in print. Heart of tex..., please take a moment and read the document. It reflects a couple of my bad experiences...
I've read the Centurions and it was a very good read. I was most impressed by the Counter Intel guy that snuck back into Dein Ben Phu before the fall so he could "experience it"!
He points out the importance of understanding the customs and traditions of the locals. He also points out the importance of having a long term relationship with our local "clients," qualities that run counter to the way Americans do business.

You MUST read 'The Preatorions' as well. That's the 'rest of the story' and is absolutly essential for properly understanding the complex French experience.

My daughter works at a used bookstore. I have her on the look out for both books. I want to read the Centurions again too.

David Galula's writings on Algeria are also a good read.

This is true in more ways than one Sir, as I've found out through my short experience here in Romania. It doesn't only apply to military operations.

We say "it's not personal, it's business", over here it's not business unless it's personal.

Thanks for posting what you have already posted. My prayers are with you and your troops and you are correct in that we don't know the complexity over there, hell we don't even know the complexity of what's going on behind the scenes on Capitol Hill! My only hope is that America gets something for the sacrifices of our troops in harms way over there.

An interesting read is the USMC Small Wars Manual 1940. It is based on the counter-insurgency fought during the Banana Wars in Central America.

How does one use "non-violence" to win hearts and minds, when the population at large is uncivilized and understands nothing but violence??? Locals will respond to whomever promises them what they want, allegiances shift with the faintest breeze, money and weapons talk -- that's power, that's protecting their self-interests. These people don't know anything else, and that's how their country has been for centuries ... and I doubt they ever can be "civilized" in any way approaching what our culture considers "civilized".

Our military appears weak, to be expending so much time, effort, so many resources, on "non-violent stabilization" efforts ... which are what? Radio broadcasts ... temporarily mollifying mullahs ... shaming corrupt cops and officials? Puleeeeeze.

And no, I haven't been there, done that ... but I correspond with soldiers and marines who are, who have been, and some of them are in the middle of the worst fighting, and some of them in intel. I'd trust the thoughts and insights of boots on the ground faster than any lace panty privileged academic.
You really have absolutly no clue what is required to fight an insurgency do you ????..

dont you think that getting in the head of what modivates the insurgent base would be important?....how about why a certain tribe does what it does ?......do you realize that some of what we are fighting is misinformation plain and simple ....I would go with the guy that can kill me at will to for talking to the coilition....so would you ....It is survial at its most base level ...I cant make you understand it .....you have never known what it is to wonder what you will eat tonight ...or if the taliban will cut your head off for talking to the wrong person ...or even if you will get blown the fuck up trying to go to work ...

any of the atmospherics uncovered by these teams are invaluble.....ANY information about who we are fighting is usefull ....

we could go in and blow the shit out the whole fucking country ...we are more than capable ....However the russians did that ...at one point there were 20 something DIVISIONS in this country and they got the shit kicked out of them....we have a fraction of that and are makeing headway .....we can beat our heads aginst the wall or we can fight smart...

With all due respect MOM ....go bake some cookies ....pack a care package and send it to your son .....we got the fight ...nothing pisses me off more than someone espouseing an uniformed opinion second hand from a source living at the SPC level .....with no fucking clue what the big picture is.... Jesus H. Christ Rangers! WTF is going on with you guys? This woman is voicing her opinion on the subject and you light her up and essentially tell her to shut the fuck up?! If you disagree with her stance, so be it. Disagree and move the fuck out. The comments that some of you directed towards this woman were completely uncalled for, rude, and just plain unprofessional. In case some of you have forgotten, we signed our names on the dotted line because we wanted to protect the personal freedoms and rights of every American citizen, not just the ones we agree with.
I think that every one of you who decided to regress back to your childhood and verbally assault this woman should man up and apologize. She didn't deserve to be treated like that!

Hmmm, so ., you wouldn't take offense to someone speaking to you like this? Really? This is a fellow Rangers mom and the woman deserves your respect. If you don't agree with her opinions, so be it. You're entitled to your opinions as well but it doesn't give you license to belittle her. Disagree politely, share your own opinion on the subject and move the fuck out. Intolerance of other people's beliefs is a character flaw that really seems to be very pervasive in this country as of late, and it's directly linked to ignorance and arrogance. Personally, if I ever found out that some stranger spoke to my mother the way some of you guys spoke to this woman, they'd be sucking food through a straw for the next few months.

Bullshit.

There is a common belief in the Army that "meeting Army standards" is good enough. NONE of US believed that shit either, and we, and our Regiment were, and are, BETTER because of that belief. As are a few other organizations within the Army.

"Tolerance" leads to accepting shit you KNOW is fucked up.

There are a gojillion forums on the innernets, but as far as I know, there is but ONE for Rangers. We are NOT "average" individuals, and our terse and spartan dialect and views reflect who we are.

I don't imagine many of us would fair very well on a "show tunes" forum, which is why we don't hang out on "show tunes" forums.
