Am I wrong to state 13F and TACP are similar? The exception being, TACP has more of a CAS role vs the 13f with Artillery and mortor role? (I read that in another forum).
If the above statement is true, are there exceptions? An exception being the Rangers or Airborne?
Thanks in advance.

Similar...but different.
They are different because TACPs are Air force and FOs are Army. You can gain CAS certification without being a TACP (or even an FO).

Re: 13F vs TACP
Do both! Get the Ranger 13F under your belt, then reenlist to go TACP or Comedy Controller! You will have mucho fun in the USAF as a Ranger.... wrote:No you are not wrong. The TACP is supposed to have more of a CAS role than the typical 13F, however Ranger TACP's and 13F's are not typical in the least. Your Ranger 13F will control more assets than some TACP's that are in-country (this all depends on which theater you're in and what units you're comparing) while your Ranger TACP (or SOF TACP) will control more assets than God himself. You wont find any 13F/JTACs outside of the Ranger Regiment so if you're wanting to control aircraft and be in the Rangers, 13F is the job for you. Also be advised you can be an 11B and also be a JTAC in the Ranger Regiment, I know the one guy that did it. Buena Suerte!Antuan wrote:Am I wrong to state 13F and TACP are similar? Re: 13F vs TACP
Great info... thanks.
For me, 13f in the Rangers is definately the most interesting.
From what I have read in several forums, 13f for prior service is not being offered, or is more limited at this time. I do realise this is the time of year all the high school kids are getting out of school and considering the military. Not to mention the difficulty of the option 40 for prior service. But, as others have stated on this forum, there are always exceptions.
Again, thanks for the info.
