Attack on Kabul luxury hotel kills 7

KABUL, Afghanistan - Militants stormed Kabul's most popular luxury hotel Monday, hunting down Westerners who cowered in a gym during a coordinated assault that killed seven people and could signal a new era of brazen Taliban attacks.

The gunmen threw grenades and fired AK-47s, and one even blew himself up despite heavy security at the Serena Hotel. Amrullah Saleh, the head of Afghanistan's intelligence service, said Tuesday that three militants attacked the hotel and that security cameras showed at least one wore a police uniform. A suspect believed to have been the attacker in the uniform was arrested, officials said Tuesday.

One American and a journalist from Norway were among the dead, officials said.

My man in Eggars was blocked on a run across town by the routes going black in the aftermath. His only comment was that they were shooting at the hotel, and it was pretty bad.

Our (Norwegian) Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jonas Gahr Stoere, was also in the same building during the attack. Thankfully he survived without any serious injuries.
