47 years old! Cool! Could you teach some of our 18-25 year old DEPs to do that? Welcome to the site Marine and thanks for your prior service. Good luck with your future plans!
Thanks everybody for your warm welcomes ... not to mention your unwarranted praise. I owe my limited prowess entirely to Stew Smith: I went from 12 to 16 pull-ups, and 42 pushups to 60, in about 2 months using a variant of the pushup/pull-up/situp pyramid workout in his 'Navy Seal Fitness' guide, a couple times a week. I've been stuck at 60 pushups for a month, so I'm going add in a 'super set' workout and some weight training, and go to 3 workouts a week. I'm shooting for 20 pull-ups and 80 pushups. I'll keep y'all posted on my progress, or lack thereof ...
I would suggest DEPs buy a copy of Smith's guide. They should probably modify the suggested workouts a bit, as I did, since obviously the SEALs place a heavier emphasis on long-distance swimming than is necessary for a Ranger candidate. On the other hand, swimming can be a valuable cross-training tool -- especially for those already in top shape. It's great for boosting both muscular endurance and cardiovascular capacity, while limiting the exposure to injuries often associated with daily running.
Come to think, I believe Smith has published other workout guides, tailored more specifically for soldiers and Marines. DEPs can search for them on Amazon, etc.
