I thought this was really cool.
Video footage of an interview of Lt. General Hal Moore directly after the battle if Ia Drang. Not too long, but it conveys well the degree to which he cares for his men.

When i was finishing up my Time in doing the Land Warrior program over in building 4 i worked for LIEUTENANT GENERAL Moore's son, LTC Moore and got to meet his father a few times. What a guy. It is very humbleing to be around him and listen to him speak.

My father was support platoon leader and S4 under LTC Moore when his battalion was still 2-23rd Infantry, at Ft Benning, and was on the LZ when then 1-7 was returning from the operation. Long before We Were Soldiers was published I heard stories about LTC Moore, in peacetime and in combat. I was privileged to take part in a Military History round-table with LTG Moore at West Point a few years ago, and it was easy to see, even then, how he left an indelible impression on his subordinates.
He was, and remained, a very direct man, but a true gentleman.
He fired his S4 in the middle of a training exercise, and made 2LT Dad the new S4. Dad said the comforting thing about it was that he immediately knew what the consequences of failure were going to be.
On his efficiency report, LTC Moore wrote what I still think to be one of the best OER/NCOER comments I ever heard::
"I gave 2LT Xxxx many opportunities to screw this battalion up, and
he never did."
Hats off to an American hero.
