Introduction

Post by worm »

Greetings Rangers

My name is John, I am a civilian (born on an Army base) and have no prior service. I am 35. I've never been comfortable in the civilian world and when I recently learned that the age limit changed both for enlistment and Basic Airborne School I knew I had a second chance to get it right. Oportunities don't come often and I will sieze this one with both hands and never let go.

I thank the Rangers for this forum, their time & their sacrifice.

Hello Civilian!

Didn't think much of your name or your introduction but I admire your ambition. I hope that you make it. Airborne is a noble trade to be in and a field expedient way of delivery to the battlefield!

Clarification

Post by worm »

Thank you Ranger rgrpuck, Ranger paladin1952 and Ranger AbnRgr289.

I apologize for not stating my intent more clearly. I intend to become a Ranger. All of my research (I've been searching this site for two and a half months, as well as other sources) indicates there is no age limit to get into the training program, just the ability to pass the APFT in the 17-21 year old age group and, of course, successfully complete all other phases of training. I do not have any illusions of how difficult this will be, but nothing worth doing is easy!

Ranger RTO

Forgive me if I don't answer the question properly. I have not done anything at the Recruiting Station yet, as the SGTs who staff it don't want to even have a conversation with me until I drop 50lbs. I understand that they do not want me to waste their time and I respect that. They did suggest I focus on the tape test, but I would consider this to be cheating myself - that and I don't want to drop dead in OSUT because I lacked the discipline and will power to do it right.

Using the APFT scoring charts available on ncoer.com I score 61 points for push-ups, 63 for sit-ups, and 63 for the 2 mile run, for a combined score of 187. Pathetic by all standards, I know. I have a lot of hard work to do, but I've dropped 70 lbs already and quit smoking.

I was in excellent shape as a young man, but stopped caring until it was too late. Then I got this second chance. I'll never make that mistake again!

Sorry to be so long winded. I hope I answered the question as asked. If not I am standing by for my smoking.

Ranger PaperStreet 2/75,

"Morbid obesity", with an emphasis on "Morbid" if I didn't change things quickly. When I found my motivation - Best Ranger 2004 - and realized that I was almost 35 and closing in on the half-way point of my life and had done nothing that was worth anything, I got to work.

I started keeping a journal, an honest one, of what I consumed in a week. I made it 3 days before I got so disgusted with myself that I had to just jump in with both feet. No sugar, no drive through burgers or the like, basically went lean-protien and ate lots of salads to keep myself full and from over eating at mealtimes and really restricted the calories. Started walking 5 miles a day until I built up to running. I lost the 70 lbs in about 45 days.

I got off track when I went to see a recruiter and was told I was no go because I passed 35 years. Figgured I had blown it once and for all. I got back on track when the age limits changed.

My plan for the other 50 is to continue as before and work on endurance, endurance, endurance.
